Day 361. What are you going to do with your life? (27/12/13)

I did think about not reposting this as so much of what I planned either came to no fruition whatsoever or was far more than expected. But that's the joy, isn't it? You've no idea what's actually coming and you change your goals as life dictates.

Just keep saying yes to interesting things.

Of late and for very obvious reasons people have been asking me the following question;

"So what are you going to do then?"

So I tell them.

At the end of January I'm going to take a month to do nothing but what I want to do. For the first time in thirty years I intend to have some time to do the things that I put to one side years ago. I'm going to write. And when I say write I mean properly write; not this sitting down for an hour at the end of the day with the iPad and filling one blank page, I'm going to write the scripts, the stories, the articles that I've been storing up.

The BBC run a writers workshop, I missed the last one because it ran from mid November to mid December and I was tied up with work but I have a couple of scripts that I want to get to them; I have at least two one hour plays in me. Bloody good ones at that.

The blog will become a website, I'll host the writing of others alongside my own, I'll monetize the site with advertising and see how much I can make from that. I have a very good article revisiting a 'lost classic' album from the year 2000 that I've deliberately not put here; that one's for Mojo or Uncut.

And then of course there are comic scripts, tons of the buggers.

And I tell people this and their expression is somewhere between 'Jesus Christ, I didn't see that coming, you really have thought this one out haven't you? You actually have a plan' and 'why did I bother asking?'

But plans? Yes. Loads.

First though, first and above all that, most immediately I have decided that next year I shall become an expert.

An expert on what though?

Doesn't matter. The world needs experts, experts can get work anywhere at all, they can turn up on Sky news, create podcasts, charge for their input and advice, pontificate at great length on anything and everything, stroke their massive egos and make a living from it.

So, as of the first of January I'm an expert. If you need me just yell and I will give you the benefit of my expertise.

There's only one thing that I can write about today. I wasn't at Hillsborough. 24 years ago today I was in work. A Manifesto For The Morning After

Some days you wake up and feel the need to share stuff from ages ago.  I wrote this in one sitting in December 2019 as a response to the previous night's election - the one that Labour didn't win. This was my manifesto for going forward. With no idea of what was coming a couple of months later, or how shoddily Boris Johnson and his scabby government would deal with the crisis.  I've not read this back but I've a feeling that it still stands now, with a Labour Party that's representing someone other than the people it used to and is determined to mollify the far right (though the reset with the EU of yesterday might be a tiny step in the direction that it should have gone; I don't honestly know, I've lost the will to read the details) The main reason for sharing this now? Day zero. How do you see in a New Year?

 7.10pm 31st December 2024 How do you see in a New Year?  With the news that Johnnie Walker has passed away. A fixture in our live, a sound on Radio 1 then Radio 2, somebody we didn't listen to all the time but loved when we did. He just felt honest, felt warm, reassuring. Always there. And we knew he was sick, knew he'd finished with radio after 58 years, but didn't expect this quite so soon. A towering presence. One of the greats. With the news that Real Madrid have put in an offer total Trent Alexander Arnold now. Like now. Which probably means he's going there in the summer. Which isn't unexpected but disappointing all the same. He'll win more there, probably get more credit for how good he is there than he has here but will fit feel the same?  For him, maybe.
