21. 21st January 2025. What happened was...

After everything I said yesterday about what I was going to do, I decided to ghost down with some flu-type lurgy. Possibly weariness related to having three hours sleep, possibly to do with the fact that, as J put it, "You spent two nights at the theatre last week, you'll have been hugging all and sundry."

So, spent a couple of hours on the couch, couple of hours lying on the bed, still failing to sleep. 

Missed the entirety of Trump's inaugural speech. But caught the sequel, where he went to big room next door, said out loud all the things he'd been told not to say in the actual speech. Like this was going to be any less televised. Watching JD Vance's face crumble on live telly as his bosses 'weave' became more and more incoherent. Still, at least you were able to see what next Saturday's SNL cold open will look like. Split screen, Dana Carvey all "No, listen, I'm serious here" and James Austin Johnson rambling forever. Ideally he'll ramble for the entirety of the show, the sketches cutting back to him occasionally. 

Small bonus that. JAJ is going to have a lot of work for the rest of the season.

We're in trouble, aren't we? The Gulf Of America, the desire to take back the Panama Canal, the executive orders that reversed so much of Biden's work immediately:

Pulling out of the Paris accord on climate change again, like LA being on fire wasn't a hint that the climate may well be terminally fucked. 

Announcing that there are now no genders, only biological sexes. Amazing how the right leans on the libertarian ideal that the world is about the rights of the individual until it's time to go, "Yeah, no, not those individuals." 

Pardoning all the 'J6 hostages'. Ie, the people who tried to take the Capitol building to stop an election being ratified for the people who'd actually voted. A lot of talk yesterday about how impressive it was that there was a 'peaceful transition of power'. Yeah, the only time there hasn't been it was instigated by the man who's just taken power again. And talked about how good Musk is with computers, linking that fact immediately to the 'landslide' in Pennsylvania. Saying the quiet part out loud, telling the world you're guilty and no-one can touch you now. 

Speaking of: Musk's fascist salute. Wow, that's a freudian slip isn't it? Live on telly Sieg Heil-ing away to his heart's content as the right wing media talk about 'some on social media claim it resembled'...

Four years. Jesus. How long till the implosion?

 Note to self: yesterday was about a single, it played at 45rpm, change the speed. Full on John Peel "this one plays at 33" moment there. Which didn't benefit Michael Stipe in any way at all. This is the return to Ben Webster that I promised. (Yesterday/ A Couple of days ago?) This is me saying that I'll return to something that I was going to talk about and actually doing it. Treasure this moment, it's quite rare. I am, if you hadn't already noticed, easily distracted. Hence the endless asides. And asides within asides.  This is how writing tends to work. This is how *part of* writing tends to work. For me. Others will have their own rhythms and rituals, I can only talk about mine. It's all about the music. The music has to be right. If the music's not right then nothing's happening.  A couple of days ago I was revisiting the script for The Comeback Special; putting some new lines in, changing and removing some old lines that just don't work as they used to.
